Synopsis

In a bustling market near a quiet river, a teenage boy moves through the crowd with the confidence of someone who has learned how to survive by being quick, invisible, and clever. He knows the rhythm of the market: the shouting traders, the crowded stalls, the distracted customers, the moments when no one is watching. But when a small act of theft spirals beyond his control, the boy is forced into a desperate chase through the noise and anger of the crowd. Not far from the market, a young girl sits alone by the riverbank, singing softly in Igbo. She is calm, gentle, and strangely patient, waiting for her big sister, Ada, and her friend, Dalu, to return from getting help. She tells the boy they had come to the river to swim, but something went wrong in the water. Now she waits, certain that Ada will come back so they can all go home. As the boy and girl talk, the world around them begins to feel unsettled. The market’s violence fades into the stillness of the river, but the quiet carries its own kind of fear. The girl’s memories do not quite fit together. The boy’s escape does not feel as certain as he wants it to be. Between them grows the uneasy sense that both are avoiding a truth they are not ready to face. Waiting for My Sister is a haunting short film about innocence, guilt, denial, and the fragile stories people tell themselves when reality is too painful to accept. Set between the restless life of the market and the eerie calm of the river, the film follows two young souls caught in a moment between fear and understanding, where memory, grief, and longing blur into something quietly devastating.
