A Tray of Locust Beans (AKA "ATOLB")
A film by Orobosa Ikponmwen
Synopsis
After losing her parents, 13-year-old Mabel is sent to live with an ailing grandmother, where she is forced to hawk trays of locust beans to survive. As poverty and vulnerability expose her to repeated sexual exploitation by neighbourhood abusers ("egbon adugbos"), Mabel's childhood is stolen piece by piece. Yet, through resilience, education, and the life-changing intervention of compassionate women, she refuses to let her trauma define her future. *A Tray of Locust Beans* is a poignant coming-of-age drama about survival, dignity, and the transformative power of hope in the face of unimaginable adversity.
