SUYA - A Spicy piece of Home
Synopsis
Suya begins as a question about food and becomes an answer about belonging. Over seven years, filmmaker Daro Umaigba travels across twelve countries—from Nigeria to the diaspora hubs of London, New York, Dubai, and Nairobi—following the scent of smoke and spice. But this is not a culinary travelogue; it is an intimate exploration of identity. Through the stories of migrants who funded their education selling Suya in Leeds, entrepreneurs rebuilding dignity in Brooklyn, and elders preserving history in Kano, the film reveals how this delicacy transcends tribe, religion, and borders. Daro seeks to complicate the single story of Nigeria, moving beyond headlines of corruption to find quiet narratives of resilience. Ultimately, Suya argues that identity is not rebuilt through grand declarations, but sometimes begins around a fire—a spicy piece of home offered to the world.
