Synopsis

Set in Johannesburg, Taste of the Land is a tender love story between Siwe Ntombela and Forest Ramushwana. An evocative portrait of urban life, African food sovereignty, and indigenous foodways rooted in everyday practices of cultivation, care, and nourishment. Through cooking, planting, and gathering, food becomes both sustenance and memory, a living ancestral archive that connects body, land, and lineage within the density of the city. As they prepare for the arrival of their first child and the closing of a chapter in the home and garden they have carefully nurtured, the film follows them through the rituals of everyday life: repurposing leftovers, tending medicinal herbs, sourcing indigenous ingredients, and hosting one final communal gathering. In these small acts, a larger philosophy emerges, one that sees food not as a commodity, but as relationship. Taste of the Land reflects on what it means to remain connected to land in urban space, offering a deeply intimate meditation on continuity, care, and the politics of nourishment.
