Synopsis

PREMISE: In an effort to change her family’s circumstance, Julie discovers boxing that sends her on an entirely unexpected journey towards social change. SYNOPSIS Slum bomber mirrors the true life story for one Julie Aloyo a Ugandan female boxer that shaped female boxing in Uganda in the most unexpected way. At the tail end of the Northern Uganda unrest, Julie witnessed her father die in an act of bravery. He sacrificed himself to save his family from the LRA rebels. 15 years later with the Northern Uganda war behind them, Julie seems to have inherited her father’s bravery. With their family struggling financially as her mother cannot bring in enough income, Julie makes a brave and tough decision to move to Kampala for work. She believes she can get a job and make enough to see her sister through school and young brothers medication. Despite objection from her mother she ends up in Kampala working as a house help for the mother of one coach Kabuye. All seems to be looking up as she is able to send money back home and is introduced to boxing which proves to be a curious hobby. Fate however soon comes calling when she is informed that her autistic brother’s condition requires more medical attention and her sister Joy will not be able to register for finals due to lack of registration fees. The never die spirit in her is awakened and she is reminded of the news she once saw on TV about how a boxer can make loads of money from a single fight. The curious little hobby becomes a calling if she’s to change her family’s circumstances but coach Kabuye is quick to demonstrate to her that it is not a sport for everyone. Will she prevail or go back to the housekeeping. Slum bomber is a story of adversity and diversity as she struggles to beat the odds of her circumstances as well as show that she can walk a mile in a world predominantly perceived to be a man’s. How does she prevail?
